About Praxis Bindery

Edge gilding

Holding a book or document in our hands, we gain access to information and history, ideas and images that have been passed down to us through the written word, the artist’s gift. What we also inherit are the book's textures, smell, sense of weight and size, which enhance our experience of the past and deepen our understanding of human nature. Today's extensive databases and electronic encyclopedias, while wonderful resources, cannot replace the physical presence of a book. At Praxis Bindery, respect for the time-honored tradition of bookbinding is married to a contemporary approach, bringing together craft and design.

Owner Peter Geraty has been a bookbinder since 1975. Since then he has refined his art through practice and repetition. The result is tangible — his work reflects careful attention to detail, proficiency with a wide range of materials; leather, gold, paper, parchment, along with sound, yet imaginative artistry. Whether your interest is in book restoration & conservation, limited editions, protective boxes, fine binding, or presentation materials, Praxis Bindery can meet your specific needs.

A well-equipped shop enables the bindery to provide many bookbinding services under one roof. You can count on receiving the individualized attention that will allow you to communicate your ideas and draw on the expertise of Peter Geraty, an associate of the American Institute for Conservation, long standing member of the Guild of Book Workers as well as Designer Bookbinders and a recognized authority in hand-bookbinding. Peter is also the director of the Integrated Studies Program at the American Academy of Bookbinding, in Telluride, Colorado. Peter's knowledge of history and materials, his willingness to experiment and take on a challenge, and his reputation as a careful and patient craftsperson form the backbone of Praxis Bindery.
