Custom Edition Binding
at Praxis Bookbindery
The years of conservation and restoration of books has
given the staff at Praxis Bookbindery a broad knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of
different materials and structural techniques. Using this knowledge, Praxis Bookbindery is
particularly able to create new bindings to a high standard. This knowledge is utilized in
the binding of editions for publishers, fine presses and individuals giving both a durable
and beautiful product within a moderate price range.
Using techniques of hand binding, editions from a shop
such as Praxis Bookbindery, differ, in feel and appearance, from the mass produced books
usually seen at the bookstore. Great attention is paid to every detail and the
craftsmanship is relegated to the forefront in production.
Editions are best discussed with the Praxis before the
text is laid out. Working closely with your printer, we can help design a structure that
is particular to your individual needs. We can also suggest materials that give an
attractive look and feel to the finished book. These materials cover a broad range of
taste from the elegant, more traditional to the exotic.
Praxis Bookbindery is able to handle editions from two
books to five hundred in number. They can be bound in paper (handmade or machine made),
cloth, leather, parchment and in a combination of materials. Gilt edges are also offered
and on leather and parchment we can tool the spine and covers in gold leaf as well. End
bands can be hand sewn or machine made in a variety of colors.
After binding decisions are made it is best to build a
prototype so the results of the design can be studied. This gives time to make final
changes to the design insuring a product that meets your expectations. The finished
bindings will have the same quality and durability as all of the other items made at
Praxis Bookbindery. They will last for many years into the future.
